Very exciting time of year in Monmouth County for Jazz/Blues enthusiasts and Gays alike!

Friday kicks off the 22nd Annual Red Bank Jazz & Blues Festival at Marine Park. While I dig the music, I go more for the BBQ! Some of the best BBQ in NJ is to be had there for sure. I’m hoping to swing by on Friday night. Who’s game?

Sunday marks the 17th Annual Jersey Pride Celebration. As always there will be a parade, live entertainment, and, you guessed it, BBQ!!!!!! I look forward to “coming out” to support my gays! Who’s coming?

Wave Gathering Festival Asbury ParkASBURY PARK – Last year’s Wave Gathering Emerging Music festival was the largest organized event ever held on the Jersey Shore, showcasing the talents of more than 180 artists at 16 music venues throughout the city and featuring informative music panels and artist interviews highlighting the ever changing music industry.

The event continues to grow along with Asbury Park, and this year will add new venues as performance sites.

Last year’s event drew more than 3,000 people, and showcased emerging artists like Ingrid Michaelson, Nicole Atkins and the Sea, Val Emmich, Earl Greyhound, DESOL, The Ruling Party, and Jenny Owen Youngs, who have continued to build their careers and gone on to major success after playing at Wave Gathering.

The festival also featured the talents of dozens of artists who call Asbury Park their musical home, including Status Green, Readymade Breakup, April Smith and the Great Picture Show, Alex Brumel, Rick Barry and Last Perfect Thing.

Performances at venues on Cookman Avenue and the newly refurbished boardwalk area will continue to be a big part of this year’s festival, to encourage patrons to shop and dine in Asbury Park’s newly re-developed areas.

Submissions from performers are being accepted now and are currently under review.

Past performers from 2006 and 2007 are automatically eligible to submit by sending their requests to info@wavegathering.com

Full weekend badges for Wave Gathering 2008 will be on sale May 1.

Just heard about this!  I’m so there! June 17th seems so far away!

Dine Downtown in April!

As Red Bank Green so eloquently reports, The Red Bank River Center is sponsoring Dine Downtown, a restaurant promotion in cooperation with 16 downtown dining establishments that feature prix fixe menus (ranging in price from $15-$35) on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings throughout the month of April.

This may be an excellent opportunity not only to try a restaurant I’ve never been to before, but perhaps make it an official Bayshore Friends gathering!  Please post if you’re interested, or better yet… join Bayshore Friends and let us know there!

Hey Red Bankers, I consider you part of the Bayshore, too!

I’ve created the Bayshore Friends social networking group.  For right now, it’s an online meeting place for people in the Bayshore area of Monmouth County.  But eventually I plan to have local meetups which may include: restaurants, coffee shops, book stores, cocktails, house parties, game nights, parks, and more.

Sign up, participate in forums, write blogs, add photos, join sub-groups, and even add videos!

Go on… check out the new Bayshore Friends social networking group right now! Feedback is appreciated.

In our neverending quest to try all sushi joints in Central NJ, our travels took us to the new Shogun Legends on Route 34 in Wall Township. It is owned by the same people who own Shogun Bey Lea in Toms River.

Overall, it’s quite nice. The decor is contemporary and elegant, and the big aquarium is quite the eye-catcher. I heard they put about 3 million into renovating the spot.  It certainly looks like it.

The main dining area downstairs is big, and there is a nice bar area as well as private party room. We dined downstairs (by the sushi bar). I wanted to go upstairs to check out the hibachi area, but perhaps another time.

I started off with the savory sesame noodles. They were good, nothing spectacular, but tasty. He had the 8 piece sushi appetizer. I forget what was all included, but it was 2 each of 4 varieties. One, however, was some sort of scallop roll in seaweed – it was very, very good.

For my “main course” I had the Pa-Pa Dragon roll – eel, tuna, avocado, with a honey walnut in it and caviar on top — very unique, very yummy! I also had a simple eel roll. He had the Flaming Heart roll – which for the life of me I forget what was in that – and a plain Philadelphia roll. No complaints from him.

While we still think Kanji – and Ichiban – are tops, Shogun Legends is definitely good enough to warrant a return visit.

Disclaimer: this is not necessarily my endorsement.

I am helping to spread the word since it is local to Monmouth County. I’m not sure I will go to this, but perhaps this may be of interest to some of you (especially the Democrats)

Kanji – a return visit!

Seriously folks, if you’re looking for a top notch sushi experience, run, don’t walk, to Kanji Steakhouse and Sushi. It’s up there with our other favorite Monmouth County Japanese restaurant, Ichiban in Ocean.

We returned on Sunday evening with his parents and grandmother. They are not big fans of Japanese food. They like hibachi just fine, but are not into sushi AT ALL.

We had our usual sashimi appetizer & avocado salad. We also ordered 3 different rolls a piece. We always share. It’s always too much, but we like to try a variety.

One of the rolls was a plain old California roll. His Dad, who has never tried any sushi in his life — not even a California roll — tried one and said “Hey, that’s pretty good!” He thoroughly enjoyed his Shumai appetizer and raved about the Shrimp Tempura (cooked) roll. Trust me, this was a big step!

We both wanted an order of Sunshine rolls, since it was the winner on our first trip. However, this time the White Christmas roll won as best special roll. It was simply divine!!! I hope they continue to offer that in the future.

We will back again and again!

Welcome to Dread Bank!

Shootings, stabbings, robberies, assaults…. what’s going on Red Bank? That’s the kind of shit I got desensitized to hearing about when I lived in Philly. Never expected to see it ’round these trendy parts.

The banter (comments) over at Red Bank Green is so funny. People pointin’ fingers at the local politicians, not enough this, not enough that, yada yada. I could rant about the state of society today, but things aren’t going to get better. It comes from the top down, peeps.

If you want change, don’t just move out of Red Bank. Move out of the country! *sigh*

I know I haven’t been posting here much at all lately, but I wanted to wish this blog a very happy (belated) birthday!  I created this blog just over a year ago to voice my disenchantment over living in an overpriced dump in Red Bank.  Obviously much has changed.  I no longer live in Red Bank.  I actually like the walls that surround me. :)

At some point in the past year, this blog has become more than just my springboard for ranting.  It has been a mini-resource for all things Red Bank.  I plan to continue to post relevant-to-Red Bank info here when I hear of anything news-worthy.  If you have any tips you like to share, by all means send them my way!

Thank you to all who have visited and continue to read and use this blog for information about Red Bank.

Happy holidays!

Kanji Steakhouse & Sushi

My guy and I are on a mission: to try every sushi restaurant in Monmouth County!

We’re certainly getting very close to our goal.  I haven’t actually put together an official list of all the sushi restaurants in Monmouth County that we’ve been to, but if you’ve been following this blog, you know there are several reviews available here from our experiences thus far.

This time, our sushi-seeking travels took us to Kanji Steakhouse & Sushi in Tinton Falls.  Having read a glowing review over on Chowhound, I was very excited to try the new kid on the sushi block.

We had a short wait while they readied our table.  There was a steady crowd in the sushi dining area, and hibachi patrons in the back.  We were presented with our menu’s and given some time to muse over them.  Our server asked for our drink orders, ran off, and then delivered them a short time later.

She then tended to other parties while we sipped our hot tea and finalized our selections.  After a few minutes she came over, took our orders, and was off.

This is where things got a little frustrating.  We were seated by a party of six and they were enjoying their special rolls which looked absolutely fantastic!  We were hungry and could not wait to get our appetizers to hold us over until our special rolls were delivered.  While our server was tending to other tables, many minutes went by and she had not returned.  In fact, it took about 15-20 minutes for our appetizers – Miso Eggplant and Kimchi Salmon – to be delivered.  She graciously apologized for the delay and explained they were quite busy at the sushi bar.

We were ravenously hungry and slightly annoyed by the long wait for our starters, but we did not dwell on it and dug in!  The eggplant was quite tasty.  The kimchi salmon only hinted of the spiciness of kimchi, however delivered all of the glorious flavor.  It was a big hit!

After we finished the starters and another wait – not so long this time thank goodness! – our special rolls had arrived!  He selected the Christmas, T.G.I.F, and Philly rolls.  I opted for the Flying Dragon, Sunshine, and eel & avocado rolls.  While they all were excellently prepared and delicious, we both conceded our favorite was the Sunshine roll.  I would have to venture a guess that it was the tempura flakes and chips that set it apart from all the others.  This was probably one of the best rolls I have had in some time.

In any event, the food was top notch and certainly excused the wait.  It was indeed worth the wait!  We were sure to tip our server accordingly.

If you’re looking for delicious sushi, we highly recommend Kanji Steakhouse & Sushi in Tinton Falls.  In fact, it has now entered our “Top 3″ sushi restaurants in Monmouth County.  (Along with Ichiban and Takara – both in Ocean).
