Seriously folks, if you’re looking for a top notch sushi experience, run, don’t walk, to Kanji Steakhouse and Sushi. It’s up there with our other favorite Monmouth County Japanese restaurant, Ichiban in Ocean.

We returned on Sunday evening with his parents and grandmother. They are not big fans of Japanese food. They like hibachi just fine, but are not into sushi AT ALL.

We had our usual sashimi appetizer & avocado salad. We also ordered 3 different rolls a piece. We always share. It’s always too much, but we like to try a variety.

One of the rolls was a plain old California roll. His Dad, who has never tried any sushi in his life — not even a California roll — tried one and said “Hey, that’s pretty good!” He thoroughly enjoyed his Shumai appetizer and raved about the Shrimp Tempura (cooked) roll. Trust me, this was a big step!

We both wanted an order of Sunshine rolls, since it was the winner on our first trip. However, this time the White Christmas roll won as best special roll. It was simply divine!!! I hope they continue to offer that in the future.

We will back again and again!

My guy and I are on a mission: to try every sushi restaurant in Monmouth County!

We’re certainly getting very close to our goal.  I haven’t actually put together an official list of all the sushi restaurants in Monmouth County that we’ve been to, but if you’ve been following this blog, you know there are several reviews available here from our experiences thus far.

This time, our sushi-seeking travels took us to Kanji Steakhouse & Sushi in Tinton Falls.  Having read a glowing review over on Chowhound, I was very excited to try the new kid on the sushi block.

We had a short wait while they readied our table.  There was a steady crowd in the sushi dining area, and hibachi patrons in the back.  We were presented with our menu’s and given some time to muse over them.  Our server asked for our drink orders, ran off, and then delivered them a short time later.

She then tended to other parties while we sipped our hot tea and finalized our selections.  After a few minutes she came over, took our orders, and was off.

This is where things got a little frustrating.  We were seated by a party of six and they were enjoying their special rolls which looked absolutely fantastic!  We were hungry and could not wait to get our appetizers to hold us over until our special rolls were delivered.  While our server was tending to other tables, many minutes went by and she had not returned.  In fact, it took about 15-20 minutes for our appetizers – Miso Eggplant and Kimchi Salmon – to be delivered.  She graciously apologized for the delay and explained they were quite busy at the sushi bar.

We were ravenously hungry and slightly annoyed by the long wait for our starters, but we did not dwell on it and dug in!  The eggplant was quite tasty.  The kimchi salmon only hinted of the spiciness of kimchi, however delivered all of the glorious flavor.  It was a big hit!

After we finished the starters and another wait – not so long this time thank goodness! – our special rolls had arrived!  He selected the Christmas, T.G.I.F, and Philly rolls.  I opted for the Flying Dragon, Sunshine, and eel & avocado rolls.  While they all were excellently prepared and delicious, we both conceded our favorite was the Sunshine roll.  I would have to venture a guess that it was the tempura flakes and chips that set it apart from all the others.  This was probably one of the best rolls I have had in some time.

In any event, the food was top notch and certainly excused the wait.  It was indeed worth the wait!  We were sure to tip our server accordingly.

If you’re looking for delicious sushi, we highly recommend Kanji Steakhouse & Sushi in Tinton Falls.  In fact, it has now entered our “Top 3” sushi restaurants in Monmouth County.  (Along with Ichiban and Takara – both in Ocean).

Some recent items of note along Route 35 between Eatontown and Red Bank include:

-Tokyo Sushi is now Sushi 2.

-The Dunkin Donuts (by Perkins) is now open.

-The Bank of New York is now Chase.

-There’s construction activity happening in Shrewsbury.  From what I can see when I’m driving by there’s a Metrovation developer sign on the site.  No mention of it on their website, though.

Yep, this is a post about eating again!

Java Moon Cafe

The man and I went to the Java Moon Cafe in Shrewsbury tonight. I’ve been meaning to check it out since I moved here a year ago. So tonight was the night finally!

I dig the celestial theme and decor. The menu is your typical American fare — sandwiches, soups, salads, burgers – as well as pasta and seafood dishes. Prices are moderate.

For starters I had a vanilla soy milk steamer! I haven’t had a steamer in a long time. It was great. C had a coffee. It came in a huge mug that held about 3 cups!

Food-wise, I went for the Grilled Corn Bread salad with crispy chicken. C had the broccoli rabe with sausage. My salad was good and perfectly portioned. C’s enjoyed his dish, too.

Service could have been better, though. C ordered a cup of lentil soup that was never delivered and the server never apologized for not delivering. We made sure the soup was not added to our bill – and it wasn’t.

Soup issue aside, this dining experience gets a grade: B

I went to the new (?) Dollar Tree in the A&P Fresh Market Plaza in Shrewsbury yesterday.  I have one word: WOW!  It’s big and clean and organized.  So two thumbs up!  If you’re thrifty like me, check it out! 😉

I love diners. They are so quintessentially “Northeast”.  As in the rest of NJ, there’s no shortage of diners to choose from in this area! I’ve already tried the East Side Diner and Broadway Diner a few times here in Red Bank, but I’m slowly exploring other diners in Monmouth County as well.

The other day my honey and I wanted to have lunch somewhere. We were on Rt. 35 in Eatontown heading towards Red Bank, I suggested the Americana since we had never been there before.

Americana Diner

I mean c’mon look at it! Lots of chrome and neon goodness! Who can resist!?

Since we’re both basically on a diet, we opted for salad. He had the Grilled Chicken Caesar while I had the Arugula Salad with Grilled Chicken, Tomatoes, and Mushrooms. Some diners try so hard at making a good salad, but fail (Hello Broadway!). However, the Americana does a satisfactory job. Good sized, plenty of dressing on the side, and they don’t make you wait forever for it. I mean it’s ONLY a salad!

This leads me to believe that if their salads are really good, I’m sure the rest of their food is great as well. I will definitely be going back to find out in the future. 🙂 Please comment if you have been there and tell me about your experience.
